It took Tong Zhu more than three hours to contact her family in the earthquake-stricken city of Chengdu.

"When I got a busy signal for three hours, I knew something was definitely not right," said Zhu, an international relations director for the Port of Tacoma. "We were all in panic mode."

Soon after the news of Monday's massive earthquake in China spread across Washington, members of the state's large Chinese community rushed to their phones and Internet, while businesses mobilized to send relief. (More)

MeditationScientists Are Beginning to Uncover Evidence That Meditation Has a Tangible Effect on the Brain
Sceptics argue that it is not a practical way to try to deal with the stresses of modern life.

But the long years when adherents were unable to point to hard science to support their belief in the technique may finally be coming to an end.

When Carol Cattley's husband died it triggered a relapse of the depression which had not plagued her since she was a teenager.

"I instantly felt as if I wanted to die," she said. "I couldn't think of what else to do."

Carol sought medical help and managed to control her depression with a combination of medication and a psychological treatment called Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. (More)

Imagine living without stress - Life without worry, anxiety or conflict. Every moment is full of awareness, joy and happiness. No, this is not a commercial for you to join a cult nor are we giving out sample drugs to deal with stress. This is about examining stress itself. What is the cause of it and how can we stop it from occurring? Some argue that stress is necessary or a norm. In actuality, it isn’t. Once we go to the source of stress and eliminate the cause, it no longer arises. (More)

Anthony KimKorean American Wins PGA Wachovia Title
Korean-American golfer Anthony Kim won yesterday the PGA Tour Wachovia Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Tiger Woods, who won the tournament last year, missed this year’s event due to knee surgery, giving 18 of the world’s top 25 players a chance at victory in Charlotte.

Rookie Kim had often said he will be a lion who beats the tiger. Yesterday, he posted six birdies and three bogeys in the fourth round and won with a combined score of 16-under 272, a tournament record.

He beat runner-up Ben Curtis of the United States by five shots.

Turning 23 next month, Kim earned his first PGA title in 38 tournaments and was the tour’s youngest winner since 2002, when 22-year-old Sergio Garcia of Spain took the Mercedes-Benz Championship.

World number two Phil Mickelson of the United States, who tied for fifth in the tournament, praised Kim as amazing, adding he will win many more tournaments.

Kim also won 1.152 million dollars and jumped to sixth from 35th in the prize money rankings, with a combined figure exceeding two million dollars. (More)

Smoking
'Marital Status Influences Women's Smoking Rates
Smoking rates of Korean women widely vary according to one’s marital status and age, according to a survey. In some cases, the difference was as wide as 14 times.

A team of researchers led by Cho Hong-joon, a family medicine professor at Asan Medical Center in Seoul, surveyed some 100,000 Korean men and women (57,246 females, 52,769 males) on their smoking patterns in 1999 and 2003. The survey showed that 2.5 percent of the married women were smokers, while 7.1 percent of the unmarried women and 9 percent of those who suffered the death of their spouses enjoyed smoking. The figure for divorced women rose drastically to 16 percent, according to the survey released Sunday.

On the contrary, smoking rates of men were not significantly different whether or not they were married. The rates for married men, unmarried men, those whose wives had died and the divorced were 62.8 percent, 67.3 percent, 75.8 percent and 77.3 percent, respectively, the survey found.

The rate of smoking among the women aged between 25 and 34 was the lowest at 1.4 percent. However, the rate of those aged 35 to 44 was 19.1 percent, 14 times higher than the former group.

The survey also found that Korean women lit cigarettes a lot less frequently compared to Japanese and American women. (More)
