The Buddhist Temple that Cares for Full-Blown AIDS Patients
Lopburi is a rural town 115 km north of Bangkok. It is steeped in history with civilizations dating back at least 1,200 years. In the mid-1700s, it was briefly the capital of Siam under King Narai. These days it is best known for its legion of monkeys which have turned the town into a local tourist attraction ….and for the AIDS temple.

Dr Alongkot DikkapanyoIn 1992 a Buddhist monk, Dr Alongkot Dikkapanyo, turned a normal upcountry Buddhist temple into a small hospice to care for fully-blown AIDS patients. At that time Thailand was finally coming to terms with AIDS, after various government had tried to cover up the problem in the interests of tourism. Now, Wat Phra Baht Nam Phu has 400 beds and a waiting list of 10,000 for AIDS sufferers. It survives on generous donation from people and companies.

The temple is in the shape of a big oval. Around the perimeter is housing for HIV and AIDS sufferers. In the middle is the gas compressor crematorium. There are also a meeting hall, Bahn Walailak where is a place for the patients final days, a care center for children with HIV, sports fields and etc.

Wat Phra Baht Nam PhuOn average, two to three patients die every day at the temple, though on some days, this figure rises to seven. Since started the temple 3,000 patients have died there. Every patient has his or her own story to tell. Some of them are dropped off in the middle of the night and left at the gates of the temple. You can read their stories through MEET THE PATIENTS from the website, http://www.aidstemple.th.org/. Don't miss!.

The role of the temple is to provide AIDS education to schools, factories, offices and the Thai population in general. This is done by Dr Alongkot and by the HIV band, who are constantly travelling to spread the word about protection against HIV.
